In the deeply religious southern community of Hope Falls, West Virginia, three cave-spelunking teens make a discovery that forever alters their small town’s destiny: a half-human, half-bat creature living in an abandoned coal mine. Isolated underground for his entire existence, the so-called Bat Boy finds a home with the local veterinarian, Dr. Parker, and his family who name the creature Edgar in hopes of assimilating him into outer society and quelling his penchant for human blood. But, as long-held secrets hidden behind the town’s Christian charity unravel, Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming’s quintessential spooky rock musical will drive the question of who the town’s monster really is.

BareStage Productions presents Bat Boy, written by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe, and directed by Teddy Lake.

Teddy Lake is a sophomore with an intended major in the Global Studies department. Bat Boy: the Musical marks her directorial debut with BareStage Productions, but Teddy has previously directed Maxwell Anderson’s Bad Seed with The Last Orchard Theatre Company in 2015. Teddy is no stranger to musical theatre and most recently was featured in BareStage’s Heathers: the Musical as JD; other previous roles include The Witch (Into the Woods), Belle (Beauty and the Beast), and Paulette (Legally Blonde). Teddy cannot wait to sink her fangs into this show:  underneath Bat Boy’s heart-wrenching storyline, myriad plot twists, biting dialogue, excess of fake blood, and hyperbolic nature lies a politically charged truth that Teddy looks forward to uncovering with the help of her cast and production team.

Message from the director:

Whether your involvement be as a performer, a member of the production team, or an audience member, opening yourself up to this show forces you to consider some of society’s most insidious tendencies through the raw beauty of live theatre. On behalf of the Bat Boy production team, I’d like to personally invite every student at Cal to join us, as we seek to examine the origins of prejudice, bigotry, and hatred— both on and offstage. When you participate in a BareStage Production, you embark on an unforgettable journey alongside an inimitable family of dedicated student artists. Actors, dancers, singers, designers, instrumentalists, and theatre-lovers: embrace your bloody destiny.
